Todd, Thanks for the post. This is a hopeful sign that the church will not be silent just because society labels a matter “political” or “legal” in nature and thefefore expects the church to take its private, devotional concerns and silently stand in the corner. We need to be continually reminded of God’s sovereign rule over all of life and the scope of His teaching, lest we allow the message to be narrowed and minimized. Thanks again.
A little off-topic and delving into the hypothetical here but it is quite an amazing statement that Piper makes in the beginning of this audio..."the only newly-originating life in the universe that comes in the image of God is man..."
He may be right...or not. we simply do not know that.
I would say that we absolutely do know that. Only mankind is made in the image of God. It's a profound point and definitely a necessary point to make in the abortion debate.
sorry I was not clear... My point was not about being made in the image of God but rather the statement he makes regarding knowledge of the universe. I realize this is hypothectical and only a useful discussion regarding language and knowledge. I would not presume to know what God may (or may not) have done elsewhere in his creation. Piper does not seem to have qualms about making such a statement...which troubles me.
sort of...but let's not build up the straw-man by bringing up Martians and Klingons...my point is that Piper is presuming to know what God has done with the rest of the universe when in fact he does not. Perhaps man (homo sapien) created in the image of God (like us) does exist somewhere else in the universe....but this is not really my point. My point is the statement itself. It presumes knowledge that he simply does not have. I could accept the statement if he had added "as far as we currently know..."

Mike,
Just so I know what you're saying...
You are toubled by Piper's statement because he did not include the possiblity of Martians or Klingons being in the image of God?

Mike,
I am amazed that this would be a big deal. I'm left speechless.
