Joel Osteen is a sad example of what happens when a man unqualified to shepherd God's flock is thrust into church leadership. Osteen's knowlege of the Scriptures is clearly slight. He has erased the line between the law and the Gospel. And yet people flock to him by the tens of thousands. He has, by far, the most viewed religious broadcast in the world. A clear indictment of contemporary evangelicalism.
Osteen clearly errs in teaching that eating pork and shell fish is against the law of God. But notice his tone. He jokes about it. It's all very light. If Osteen truly believes that the Old Covenant dietary laws are still active then shouldn't he be warning his people not to violate God's law? Isn't God's law more than just good advice?
There was a time when I also referred to Joel Osteen as "Pastor Osteen" in the spirit of giving the benefit of the doubt. I've decided to stop doing that. He's just another self-designated "life coach" (re: his interview on 60 Minutes) who sprinkles his "pep rally" speeches with Pop Psychology gibberish and Christianoid language.

One would have to explain to pastor Joel the difference between the two covenants.

ReplyDeleteI had the same thought. I've missed the biblical injunction to consume buffalo meat. Maybe Joel is studying the TNIV.
