As someone who until November of 2008 spent...Mike,

As someone who until November of 2008 spent his entire life in Southern Baptist Churches I can tell you that the strategy at one time was, "Get 'em when they get to college of seminary."

In other words the Southern Baptist Convention almost went the way of the American Baptists, PCUSA, and United Church of Christ because our seminaries had become theologically liberal. They utterly rejected the inerrancy of Scripture (and a whole host of essential Christian doctrines).

Now, in many cases they were very careful. In the case of Southern Seminary, generations of professors signed the statement of faith without believing it. These teachers knew that as go the seminaries so go the churches.

There was a very low opinion of the churches by the faculty of these seminaries. They did not want to be accountable to the "ignorant masses" populating the pews on Sundays and so they acted as it they weren't. Of course by the late 1970's and 80's they learned differently.Todd Pruitthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08614293087144493430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1268539650499556740.post-13598307524560210222009-04-30T11:01:00.000-05:002009-04-30T11:01:00.000-05:00So am I to understand Mr. Sparks as saying that ul...So am I to understand Mr. Sparks as saying that ultimate and truly reliable truth is best taught in universities rather than the church? I don't believe I have seen that model put forth in Scripture although it sounds a bit like Gnosticism.Mike Lhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08686752682354393254noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1268539650499556740.post-87050983660660421572009-04-28T15:55:00.000-05:002009-04-28T15:55:00.000-05:00Hmmm . . . that does explain a few things I've won...Hmmm . . . that does explain a few things I've wondered about concerning Dr. Sparks' employer. After reading this I'm glad I was among those "uninformed constituencies" that schools like Wheaton cater to.Mark W.https://www.blogger.com/profile/11610176163464734753noreply@blogger.com
